We  are building background knowledge for our Mildred Taylor author study. We are finishing our research, baseball cards, and job interviews based on the Negro Leagues and Jackie Robinson integrating baseball in 1947. Students will be reading and viewing a variety of texts and videos including fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and documentary). We will refine our knowledge of the reading strategies and research. This week we are continuing the newspaper unit with a focus on editorials. The focus of this paper is persuasion. We continue to apply the tricks authors use to create voice in our writing and appeal to our audience. Essay writing such as hooks, thesis, coherence, cohesion, support, etx.will be important to the conversation. We are reviewing combining sentences, correcting sentence fragments and run-on sentences, and the smiley face tricks (expanded moment, specific detail, repetition for effect, figurative language, full circle ending, humor, hyphenated modifier, and magic 3 )
