IDIOMS
An idiom is a natural manner of speaking to a native speaker of the language. What would you think if I told you, “A picture paints a thousand words”? Do you picture a paint brush with words coming from it? Idioms are metaphorical phrase, and are not to be interpreted literally. Strong readers are able to recognize idioms in text and can inference the meaning of unfamiliar ones.

IDIOM Menu #1
Complete the following activities.
1. Next to each idiom, write the metaphorical definition. There are many websites that have idiom lists, but the two that I have found to be very helpful are as follows: www.idiomsite.com and www.GoEnglish.com/idioms.asp
2. Create Vocabulary Cartoons for 5 of the idioms. You may choose the idioms that you would like to illustrate. Your comics must include the following:
a. The idiom should be in the upper right-hand corner of the page. Put the definition below it.
b. An illustration that demonstrates the LITERAL meaning of the idiom.
