Our School

Welcome to the MSN Band!

Whether you are new to the district or are just looking for more information about band at MSN, this is a good place to start.

Here are some basics.  For more information, visit the "Handbook" link on the left.

  • We have three concerts every year
  • some sixth graders will be allowed to participate in the Solo & Ensemble contest in February
  • there is a jazz band open to qualified sixth graders
  • we have activities planned all through the year for everyone to enjoy

Participating in Band is a great way to learn to play your instrument in a group, meet new friends and share something students like with others.  It is a lot of fun as well as a rewarding experience.  Students will work hard at rehearsals and receive a letter grade on their report cards for their effort.

A specific curriculum is followed to ensure students are learning new skills and building on those they have.  The curriculum continues throughout the three years in the Band here at Middle School North.  As test results and studies show, involvement in the performing arts is a significant indicator of success in other academic subjects and contributes greatly to development as a well rounded and well educated person.

            Here's how it works:

  • Sixth grade band (Cadet Band) is a homeroom by itself.  Mr. Stenzel is the homeroom teacher as well as the Band director.

  • Cadet Band meets five days per week during homeroom time.

  • Lessons happen just like in elementary school.  Every student has a group lesson once per week on a certain day of the week.  The specific period of the lesson rotates so no class is missed more than once or twice per quarter.

I am looking forward to working with each student as they enter the Middle School.  Band is a good place to be - it means students already have friends here when so much else is all new.  We will work hard, have fun and learn a lot of new music.

Parents - please feel free to call me if you have any questions about Band.  There will be a parent meeting for Band Parents at the beginning of the school year.  Please plan to attend if possible.
